This page has important information about mailing addresses for form 4868 that need to be sent by mail.

What is Tax Form 4868?

Individual taxpayers use IRS Form 4868 to request an extension to file income tax returns, such as Forms 1040, 1040-SR, 1040-NR, 1040-PR, or 1040-SS. By completing Form 4868, taxpayers can request a six-month delay.

When is the deadline for filing Form 4868?

File Form 4868 by April 15, 2024 (or April 17, 2024, if you live in Maine or Massachusetts). Taxpayers who file for the fiscal year must file by the original due date of their return.

For taxpayers outside the U.S.:

  • If you are a U.S. citizen or resident living or working outside of the U.S. and Puerto Rico, you automatically get an extra two months to file and pay your taxes, but interest will still be charged. You have until June 17, 2024, to file and pay. If you need an extra 4 months, check the box on line 8.
  • If you meet the "bona fide residence or physical presence" test, you may be able to get special tax treatment. Fill out Form 2350 to ask for more time to file your return if you don't think you'll be able to by the due date.

Form 1040-NR filers:

  • File Form 4868 by the return due date. If you didn't get wages related to U.S. tax withholding and your return is due June 17, 2024, check the box on line 9.
  • The longest that you can get an extension is six months, until October 15, 2024, unless there are special circumstances. Find out more in Pub. 54.
